It is believed that Akita gets along well with children and can be excellent nannies for them. But let’s delve into this question a little deeper.
As you already know, dogs of this breed are notable for their high intelligence, protective features, courage and loyalty. But at the same time, they are very wayward and listen not to everyone: Akitas have their own in-house hierarchy. The same applies to the attitude towards children.
When it comes to a dog, what does “nanny” mean anyway? Well, of course, the fact that Akita will not let a stranger or an animal near the child. This dog will also gladly ride the baby on a sled – such physical exercises are only a joy to them. Yes, Akitas are famous for their patience and are not prone to sudden aggression. But, nevertheless, you should not lose your vigilance: kids see the dog as a huge toy, they can drag them by the tail, try to put something into their ears, etc. Put an end to any child’s attempts to attack and shout at the puppy, even as a joke – as you can imagine, the consequences of such “fun” can vary dramatically. Besides, the dog itself can get absorbed in playing and accidentally injure the child by stepping on, pushing, scaring. Stay close until you are completely sure that your lovely little ones can be left alone.
How to help your dog befriend children? In general, the dog’s attitude towards children directly depends on the environment the puppies grew in, whether they saw children from the moment of birth, how well they are socialized. Be highly cautious not to leave children alone with a puppy if you are not sure of their adequate behavior: the fear experienced by a dog in childhood can develop into a persistent dislike of children in adulthood. If this happens, you will have to gradually re-accustom the puppy to the child. Important: do not encourage unwanted behavior (growling, cowardice) with soothing strokes and gentle persuasion: you will achieve the opposite – the dog will learn this particular pattern. So just ignore the fear and close the distance between puppy and child step by step. It is also necessary to accustom the Akita to other people’s children as early as possible: let them look from afar, get used to children, bring them a little closer, etc. On a walk, let other children to come and pet your puppy: the dog will get used to children’s presence more quickly and will not show anxiety or concern in the future.
Remember, Akita is a zealous guardian of its territory and its family. That is why, when guests with children come to your house, be vigilant: the dog may react capriciously to the children’s attempts to take its toys, approach the bowls, and so on.
